Kyle Walker: “I Joined Milan to Reignite My Love for Football”

In an exclusive interview with GQ Italia, Kyle Walker, one of AC Milan’s high-profile winter signings, opened up about his career, his move to Italy, and how it has reignited his passion for football. The English defender shared personal insights into his journey from Sheffield to Milan, revealing what motivated him to take on this new challenge.

A Journey from Sheffield to the Football Elite

Reflecting on his career, Walker acknowledged the role genetics played in shaping his athleticism. “I have to thank my parents; genetics have certainly helped me develop a certain physical prowess. At my age, continuing to perform at high levels is not something to take for granted.”

Growing up in Sheffield, football was always his dream. “I remember looking out of my window as a child and seeing Sheffield United’s stadium in the distance. Playing there was my dream, and I did everything possible to make it happen.”

Walker’s journey to professional football was swift and direct. “At seven, I went from playing on the streets to joining the Sheffield United Academy, skipping any intermediate steps,” he recalled. This early start laid the foundation for a career built on perseverance and dedication. “I’ve always focused on taking things one step at a time, one game at a time.”

The Importance of Team Unity at Manchester City

Speaking about his time at Manchester City, Walker highlighted the importance of camaraderie and team spirit. “Being united is fundamental if you want to achieve success in modern football,” he stated. “Players spend more time with their teammates than with their families, so it’s crucial to create an environment that fosters a sense of togetherness and collectivity.”

Walker played a crucial role in City’s dominance, winning multiple Premier League titles and other domestic and international trophies. However, after years of competing at the highest level in England, he felt the need for a fresh challenge.

A New Challenge in Milan

“For me, Milan represents a new challenge,” Walker explained. “I needed a spark, something to reignite my love for football. Not that I ever lost my passion, but I felt the need to build a new life, face new opponents, and experience fresh stimuli.”

The England international also spoke about the cultural differences between football in England and Italy. “Football is experienced differently here. In Italy, there is a strong emphasis on defending, more so than in England, Spain, France, or Germany. Here, a 1-0 victory is often seen as the perfect result. It’s a different philosophy, but in the end, they’re right—three points are all that truly matter.”

Beyond football, Walker is excited to explore Milan’s culture, including its world-famous fashion scene. “Milan is not just about football. Fashion week is coming up, and I’m looking forward to experiencing it all,” he said.

Honoring Beckham & Fighting for Inclusion

Walker also shared a special moment he had upon joining AC Milan, involving David Beckham. “When I arrived, Beckham sent me a message. I replied asking if he minded me taking number 32, the same shirt number he wore at Milan. He told me: ‘Of course, it’s an honor for me, wear it with pride.’ That meant a lot to me. We’re talking about a man who changed football and helped shape it into what it is today.”

Walker also expressed his pride in wearing Milan’s fourth kit, which celebrates Black excellence. “Wearing this shirt sends a powerful message about unity and inclusion,” he stated. “We live in an era where racism still occurs daily, both online and beyond. It’s crucial that big clubs like Milan take a stand and engage in meaningful initiatives to promote equality.”

A Fresh Start in Italy

For Walker, moving to Milan is more than just a career move—it’s about rediscovering joy in football. “I wanted a new challenge, something to push me and make me fall in love with the game all over again,” he concluded.

With Walker embracing this new chapter, AC Milan have not only gained a world-class defender but also a leader determined to make a difference—both on and off the pitch.
